Hi,
I'm stealing this subject from another forum but putting it here, to make it more pertinant to us..Please tell us about a interesting historic site in New York that is worth seeing this summer, I'm thinking of the little known ones that people might not think of, but are worth driving to see..For me, one that pops up is Crown Point at the end of Lake George, its a beautiful site, that still has the ruins and original moats that the British and French constructed in the early 1700's.. Once you are in the park, its easy to forget what time period you are in, and being right on the water its a beautiful site.. _________________ thanks

Well, let's see. For me around here first I'd have to say obviously the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie. It is a Rev War site, but did see use as an armory during the Civil War. Most of the historic sites around me are Rev War or French and Indian war sites, but I went and visited the burial site of Col. Elmer Ellsworth in Mechanicsville I think it was, then I visited the burial site of Uncle Sam in Troy. I believe that General George Thomas, the "Rock of Chickmauga" is buried in Troy as well. Lastly, while I haven't been there yet, I believe up in Wilton there is Grant's Cottage, where General Grant wrote his memoirs and ultimately was the place where he died, I'm meaning to get up there some time. _________________ Dan Houde

In the Syracuse Area, there is the Soldiers and Sailors monument, with the Jerry Rescue memorial right beside. General Edwin "Bull" Sumner is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, also in Syracuse. In general, the abolitionist sentiment of the Central New York Region can be found at the Seward house in Auburn, along with the Harriet Tubman home. And the Garrett Smith business in Peterboro.

Alex.
The Syracuse S&S monument is very impressive.Down here in the Binghamton area one can visit the grave sites of John C. Robinson,Col.David Ireland and Ogarita Booth Henderson the daughter of John Wilkes Booth.
Road trip wise some places I like to visit is Ft.Wm. Henry.Ft.Stanwix is nice. I am trying to talk the wife into a taken the kids to see Niagra Falls even though my real plan is seeing Fort Niagara a place I last visited when I was only 7. _________________ Brian W.Swartz
