She transcribed, researched and annotated the 59 letters. Dressed as her great grandmother, Sarah Englis in historically accurate 1880s clothes, Ms. Patch will look back 20 years to the war and read excerpts from the soldier's letters. The letters, many signed "This from George," are a brief history of service in the 89th New York Regiment from 1861 until 1865 as seen through the eyes of a Corbettsville farm boy. They gradually reveal the personality and values of Sergeant George Magusta Englis; each letter puts the reader closer to the soldier's soul.” Sergeant George Magusta Englis served in the same Company of the 89th NY Volunteers as our Private Harvey Welch. – The Gallupville House

WHO IS HARVEY WELCH AND HOW DID THIS EVENT COME ABOUT?
In 1961, Allen Burton, town historian, having scoured the back roads, sat down at his typewriter and produced:
SMALL FAMILY CEMETERIES
IN THE TOWN OF WRIGHT
SCHOHARIE COUNTY - NEW YORK
Among those graveyards, Burton noted a “cemetery on the John Kump Farm on Kump Road beside road – about one eight mile on same side as house.” The cemetery contained but one grave, that of Civil War veteran Harvey Welch. Burton noted its condition:
“One stone – off base – no care”
Harvey Welch was born December 5, 1843 in Albany, NY to Morgan L. and Zillah M. (Wilber) Welch. He had two brothers – Alonzo and Eseck – and three sisters – Sarah, Lucina, and Louisa. By 1850 the family was in the Town of Wright, where Harvey’s father worked as a blacksmith.
By 1860 we lose track of Harvey. His mother, with her youngest Alonzo, was living in Silver Lake (Susquehanna County) Pennsylvania.
We next locate Harvey in Hawleyton (Broome County), New York on November 26, 1861. It was there that, just shy of his eighteenth birthday, standing exactly five –and—a-half feet tall, with blue eyes and brown hair, he enlists in the 89th Regiment of Infantry in the State of New York. He joins Company K, the same unit his older brother Eseck had joined two months earlier.
Eseck Welch would be promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, then First Sergeant and would end up in Ohio where he died on January 13, 1905.
The 89th saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburgh and was present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Of the 1321 men in the 89th, 159 died of disease or accident; 89 were killed or wounded.
One of the 159 was our Harvey who died at 20 years old, unmarried, on July 17, 1864 from “ulceration of the bowels.”
Some 140 years later [S.U.V.] Brother Richard Sherman, brought Harvey’s plight to the attention of the Corporal James Tanner Camp #134, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Since then Richard and (S.U.V.] Bro. [Lawrence] Eli Bradish embarked on what has become known as the “Harvey Welch Project [which has culminated in the Ceremony we are sharing here today.] Let it never be said that any “boy in blue” will knowingly suffer the fate of “no care.” Peter J. Lindemann PCC– Author- and Secretary
Corporal Tanner Camp #134 S.U.V. of the Civil War
The Tanner Camp wishes to acknowledge Charles A. Greenfield PCC; for his efforts in securing and erecting the new stone for Pvt. Harvey Welch.
