The 148th New York Volunteer Infantry Reenactment Group is aggressively seeking new members to replenish its ranks from 40+years of parades, battle reenactments and living histories. We are a family friendly organization that strives to portray, as authentically as possible, the life of the northern Civil War soldier. We are primarily looking for those that wish to portray the 148th New York soldier however, persons/families that wish to portray civilians would also be welcomed. Also, any persons wishing to be a musician/drummer would be welcomed. A brief history of the 148th New York, dubbed the "gallant 148th" that you would be a member of: Raised in the summer of 1862 as part of President Lincoln's call for an additional 300,000 men to suppress the rebellion, the 148th New York filled its ranks primarily with men from Yates, Seneca, and Ontario counties, the Finger Lakes Region of the great state of New York. Seeing mostly garrison duty in the area of Norfolk,VA during its first year of service, the 148th New York went on to forge an outstanding reputation for gallantry in such actions as Fair Oaks, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Chaffins Farm, Drewry's Bluff, Rice's Station, Burke's Station, and Appomattox Court House. the 148th saw 5 of its members win the Congressional Medal of Honor during its time of service. We still have many more events slated for the 2008 season. If you are interested in becoming a member or just talking about the Civil War and/or this regiment from Western New York, please contact us today. I hope to have our website up and running by the winter of this year. Until then, please email me at cgavette23@gmail.com. |

| Post subject: | 148th Regiment, Co. G |
My 2nd Great-Grandfather, Richmond Clark Emmons, was a member of Co. G of the 148th Regiment. He was discharged in August of 1863 due to epileptic fits which left him diabled for the rest of his life. I also have a 2nd Great Uncle who served in the 125th Regiment mustered in at Troy. We have two of his diaries which he kept-1862 and 1863. He was captured and sent to Belle Island then to Andersonville where he died. The entries about Gettysburg, Picketts charge, Belle Island and the horrors there are graphic. My grandfather Emmons did not leave any diaries but we do have his picture in his uniform with his rifle. I have devoted most of my spare time to Boy Scouts during my working career. I have recently been suspended without pay from the state job I have held for over 18 years. Like so many others we are struggling to make ends meet. I have time but no money at this point. Hopefully this information will be useful to you. I have transcribed the diaries and eventually will send copies to the New York State Museum and Gettysburg. I know the history posted states that the 148th was from the Yates, Seneca & Ontario County area but would be interested in where the current 148th is headquartered. I am moving to Westchester County and would be interested in a unit in close proximity to that area. |

We are based in Waterloo, NY, which is rather bit away from Westchester. I do not remember any units from that area, someone around here may. Andy |
